Resume Tips

  • Prioritize your resume. Don't just put things in chronological order. When applying for a job, you want potential employers to see what you've done that's more important and pertinent to them.
  • Quantify your accomplishments. Intangible accomplishments, no matter how large they seem, are rarely as impressive as actual numbers, facts and figures. Find ways to measure your accomplishments and report those numbers--but don't embellish!
  • Use key industry words. Potential employers are looking for straight forward content that speaks their language. This is one case where jargon can be a good thing, as long as everyone concerned knows its significance.
  • Match yours skills with industry needs. Don't treat your resume like a menu of a la carte options your potential employer may or may not want; sell your skills! Match the things you do well with the current needs of you potential employer or industry.
  • Make it visually simple. You're not creating a colourful piece of art. Keep your headers and titles simple. Make the resume a vertical piece. Someone should be able to peruse it quickly, noting short bullets that catch their attention.

Interview Tips

  • Relax: Think positive thoughts and visualise yourself in the interview.
  • Be spontaneous: Be yourself; be as honest as you can be and engage in conversation with the interviewer.
  • Set goals for the interview: Make sure the interviewer knows as much as he or she possibly can about your skills, abilities, experience and achievements.
  • Know the question behind the question: Try to identify the type of question being asked and what in particular the interviewer is trying to elicit from the question.
  • Nonverbal clues: Watch out for your body language, maintain good eye contact, show interest and enthusiasm and speak with a well-modulated voice.
  • Sell yourself: Do not rely on your application document and resume in selling yourself, back up your skills with real experiences.
  • Ask questions: By asking the employer questions, you show that you have done your research and that you are interested in the organisation.
  • Your appearance: Your appearance is very important and forms part of the first impressions an interviewer will have of you.
  • Check the venue: Be early and prepared. To be safe do a practice run checking where the interview will take place and how long it takes to get there.
  • Follow up: After the interview send a thank you letter and request feedback regarding your performance in the interview.
